👉 About Chiang Mai Old City
The old city is only a mile square, (say, 2.5 sq km) and as such is easy to walk around. Note that this is not necessarily a pleasant experience as the sidewalks are uneven (or nonexistent) and Chiang Mai gets hot during the day, especially during the hot season, and rainy during the rainy season.
° Tourist Attraction inside the Old City Walls
① Wat Phra Singh, Corner of Singharaj Rd and Rajdamnern Rd. Probably Chiang Mai’s bestknown temple, housing the Phra Singh image, completed between 1385 and 1400. Of most historical interest is the Wihan Lai Kham in the back, featuring Lannastyle temple murals and intricate gold patterns on red lacquer behind the altar. The walls of the chapel are covered with murals illustrating Lanna customs, dress, and scenes from daily life. To enter the temple is free for Thais, and 20 baht for foreigners.
② Wat Chedi Luang, Prapokklao Rd. Almost in the centre of Chiang Mai are the remains of a massive chedi that toppled in in the great earthquake of 1545. A magnificent testament to Lanna (northern Thai) architecture and art, restored sections hint at its former glory. Wat Chedi Luang is also home to the \”Pillar of the City\”, a totem used in ancient Thai fertility rites.
③Three Kings Monument
At roughly the center of the walled city, in the district where the former rulers of Chiang Mai built their palaces, stands the monument to the ‘Three Kings’ King Mengrai, the founder of Chiang Mai; his contemporary and reportedly good friend King Ramkamhaeng of Sukothai; and King Ngam Muang of Payao. According to legend, the three worked together to lay out the city of Chiang Mai. The sculpture has become something of an iconic image representing Chiang Mai. You will see it reproduced in various forms all around the city. The sculpture stands in front of the old provincial administration building, which now houses the Chiang Mai City Art \u0026 Cultural Center.
