Who am I? A philosophical inquiry – Amy Adkins

Throughout the history of mankind, the subject of identity has sent poets to the blank page, philosophers to the agora and seekers to the oracles. These murky waters of abstract thinking are tricky to navigate, so it’s probably fitting that to demonstrate the complexity, the Greek historian Plutarch used the story of a ship. Amy Adkins illuminates Plutarch’s Ship of Theseus.

In this video, we will explore What is a Sensory Memory.
We will look at what it is, how does it work, why it’s important and I will also share some examples to illustrate it.
To better understand the Sensory memory concept we first need to look at how information is processed in general.
When we consume the information it first goes through our Sensory memory to short term memory and eventually some information gets stored in long term memory.
Sensory memory allows individuals to retain impressions of sensory information after the original stimulus has ended.
If you are sitting at the desk and you look around you will notice different elements like computer, phone, water bottle, Notebook etc.
Your ability to recognize these elements are thanks to your sensory memory. In general, there are 3 types of Sensory memory:
First Iconic memory, also known as visual sensory memory, involves a very brief image. This type of sensory memory typically lasts for milliseconds.
Second Echoic memory, also known as auditory sensory memory and it involves a very brief memory of sound. This type of sensory memory can last for up to three to four seconds.
Third Haptic memory, also known as tactile memory and it involves the very brief memory of a touch. This type of sensory memory lasts for approximately two seconds.
The purpose of sensory memory is to retain information long enough for it to be recognized and then selected information to be passed onto short term memory.
While the sensory memory may be very short, it plays a critical role in the attention and memory processes.
I hope that you enjoyed this video and I was able to give you a quick overview of what Sensory Memory is and what role it plays in our life.

In this video, we will explore What is a ShortTerm Memory
We will look at what it is, how does it work, why it’s important and I will also share some examples to illustrate it.
Shortterm memory, also known as \”\”active memory\”\” is the capacity for holding, a small amount of information in mind in an active, readily available state for a short period of time.
To better understand the Sensory memory concept we first need to look at how information is processed in general.
When we consume the information it first goes through our Sensory memory and some of that information goes to Short term memory where we retain it for a bit before storing in Longterm memory.
Now let’s take a look at the 2 characteristics that are important to know about short term memory and that is Duration and Capacity.
Most of the information kept in the shortterm memory will be stored for approximately 20 to 30 seconds before it’s either forgotten or stored in long term memory.
Imagine that you are in the shop and you have to pay for your groceries. This information is in your short term memory and short after payment the information is forgotten.
When it comes to shortterm memory capacity then the magic number seems to be 7 plus or minus 2 and it is also known as channel capacity.
If you have to remember the items to buy without writing them down then you are likely to cope with 5 to 9 items. If you have more than 10 then be sure you write them down.
Shortterm memory is often confused with working memory, but they have different functions.
Working memory refers to the processes that are used to temporarily store, organize, and manipulate information.
While Shortterm memory, on the other hand, refers only to the temporary storage of information.
I hope that you enjoyed this video and I was able to give you a quick overview of what ShortTerm Memory is and what role it plays in our life.
