As Putin intensifies his bombing campaign in Ukraine and threats multiply worldwide, Britain’s national security, and the brave men and women of our armed forces deserve nothing less than our complete support.
This week, our Strategic Defence Review will give them proper backing, proper funding, and the tools they need to keep Britain safe. It will address both the gaps in our armed forces after years of hollowing out and kickstart a fundamental shift to warfighting readiness for our digital age.
This is only possible because of the Prime Minister’s commitment to deliver the largest sustained increase to defence spending since the end of the Cold War, rising to 2.5% of GDP in 2027. In a changing world, national security is a foundation of our Plan for Change. The SDR will make Britain safer and more secure, driving economic growth and higher living standards.
But this isn’t just about missiles and munitions. It’s about the people who serve. As a result of the Strategic Defence Review, we are investing an extra £1.5 billion in housing for military families, meaning that more than £7 billion will be spent on military accommodation in this Parliament.
We’re also rebuilding Britain’s military muscle with 7,000 UK-built long-range weapons and at least six new munitions factories which will mean more than 1,800 skilled jobs in every nation and region of the UK. Our increased defence spending is not only about defence – it’s about bringing good jobs and growth to communities throughout the UK.
This government’s mission is to keep Britain secure at home and strong abroad. Our Strategic Defence Review delivers exactly that – backing our troops, boosting our defences, and ensuring Britain once again leads on the world stage.
That’s what our armed forces deserve. That’s what Britain needs. And that’s what this government will deliver.
