Abstract painting can thrust us into the unknown, immersing us in the midst of liminal visual and emotional experiences, without fixed name or context. This kind of art is full of risk and unexpected reward, asking the viewer to take a fraught journey right along with the artist.
Anne Marchand’s paintings transport us into virtual worlds that form themselves before our eyes. She presents visions of a reality that is alive with shifting space, moving color, and animated lines. These phenomena are embodied in the material reality of paint, along with a range of materials embedded in the work’s surface.
In Marchand’s work over the past ten years, the emotional range, poetic import, and inner structures have evolved significantly. What remains consistent is this artist’s pursuit of a quality of mystery and sensuousness in everchanging scenarios of transformation.

Frank Bowling – From Figuration to Abstraction | Artist Interview | TateShots

The artist reflects on his career and the impact of moving from London to New York.
‘I realised that one of the main ingredients in making paintings was colour and geometry’, says the artist.
Born in Guyana (then British Guiana) in 1934, at 19 years old Frank Bowling moved to London. He went on to study painting at the Royal College of Art alongside David Hockney and R.B. Kitaj.
As Bowling reflects on his long career, he remarks that his shift from figuration to abstraction came when he moved from London to New York.
‘As I became more involved in the making of paintings, I realised that one of the main ingredients in making paintings was colour and geometry. And in New York I found ways of proceeding to deepen my investigations in that area’, says the artist. ‘New York was very much the place where it was all happening.’
After moving to New York, the artist began working on a series paintings where poured paint directly onto canvas.
‘It was spilling, dripping, rushing’, says Bowling. ‘It’s a process of a ground all over, the canvas tacked to the wall, the pouring and throwing and spilling and dripping takes place, then the material is allowed to settle, and once it starts drying you sort of pull it back up the wall, so that it can be completely dried out.’
‘It all happens very much in an extempore way. I don’t have any preplanned idea about how I’m going to make a painting.’

Understanding Abstract Art is not that Hard

Understanding abstract art is not that hard! In this short video the abstract artist Mark Johonsen explains simply the best way to understand abstract art. As a professional artist his years of experience creating simple colorful abstract paintings that anyone can enjoy make it easy for you to get a better understanding of abstract art without all the rubbish and complex art talk that can make abstract art seem difficult to appreciate.
As an abstract I’m inspired by the things that are around me, by the natural beauty of the world, by people, by the sky, by things that effect me emotionally then I use my skill, my talent to create paintings that inspire similar feelings in others.
What all abstract art is about is the emotional effects it creates in others be that peace, tranquility, passion or anything else. Patterns, colour, line and shapes all have the power to influence our moods and the essence of abstract art is to truly understand people.
Ultimately understanding abstract art is about how dose it make you feel. Do you like it. Dose it make sense or not. because all abstract art is about is you, liking something or not As an abstract artist for me it’s about creating paintings that create an emotional effect in you as an individual.
