In computing, a denialofservice attack (DoS attack) is a cyberattack in which the perpetrator seeks to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users by temporarily or indefinitely disrupting services of a host connected to the Internet. Denial of service is typically accomplished by flooding the targeted machine or resource with superfluous requests in an attempt to overload systems and prevent some or all legitimate requests from being fulfilled.

A common way to try to disable a website or web service is known as a denial of service (DoS) attack. A denial of service attack occurs when the attacker can overwhelm a website with illegitimate requests to the point where it cannot handle legitimate ones. How the website and web server are designed impacts the degree to which DoS attacks succeed or fail.
