  1. James Dumas says:

Just maybe it's the GEARING. I've heard that the BMW is really Low geared, riding my old Harley Electra Glide, my 6th. gear is spaced tall for easy freeway cruising at a low RPM. Kind of like an Overdrive. So, if the Harley rider would have DOWN SHIFTED into 5th. gear at the start of the Roll-On, and ran 5th gear out to near redline, then upshifted into 6th. He probably would have blasted past the BMW. I downshift into 5th. every time I pass cars on the two lane back roads when they're doing the 60MPH speed limit.
Have the two bikes do a drag race from zero to 120MPH. My money would be on the Harley.

  2. Ivica Stanic says:

Great to see new winds blowing at Harley, I am surprised that Harley took the chain as final drive for this bike, that could be the weakest point of the bike, shaft drive or even belt drive seams like much better solution for adventure bike. It is strange that they didn't comment that in the video.

  3. BigFiveJack says:

Another Great Video! The Cruiser by BMW needs to have a means for taller guys to open up the angle of the knees. I love riding a Can-Am Spyder RT because I can constantly change the angle of me knees. It's a shame they're SO unreliable mechanically.

  4. Theo Andersen says:

6:01 I didn't even realize I had any reservations about showing a BMW vehicle in front of a DC-3 until now. Don't. Don't showcase a Bavarian Motor Works vehicle in front of a McDonnal-Douglass aircraft.

  5. Jeff Palmer says:

Bmw, well made cool bike unless youre 6’3. The motor is where the feet should be. Now that pan American . Well even tho its incorporated all the good motor and suspension qualities of a Victory Octane or an Indian Ftr… Well done ! @152 hp? But yeah that Beamer…Hope to see this Harley motor in a lot more models. But for now Ill just keep riding my trusty ol 79k Vic xc and let the one upping continue!! Good vid !

  6. Greg Olson says:

I traded in an ADV (Vstrom) for a Softail (Sport Glide) and my chronologically-gifted knees thanked me. Which is something you didn't mention about the R18 restricting the rider to mids or roasting your legs on the jugs. Not comfortable long distance.

  7. YamahaCruiser says:

"Horsepower sells bikes, but torque is what wins races" I'd say in terms of performance, the Pan America actually competes more with the KTM 1290 SAS. I think most folks compare it to the GS simply because that's the gold standard for the segment, and more of a household name.

  8. Jim Taylor says:

Harley did a better job of creating something a BMW rider would ride. Sadly Harley Dealers are once again not supporting the non-cruiser in the line-up, while BMW dealers are activity promoting the R18 and those who are interested. I was excited about the pan America, but the Harley dealer has guaranteed that my next bike will be BMW GSA for the bike AND the dealer.

  9. PlotShots says:

Excellent, open-minded review. I’ve owned all of them. Well, except for the current Pan-American and the R1800. I think that Harley is on the right track and BMW is just wishful thinking.

  10. John M says:

Out of all the crazy, hilarious things you guys have done Zack’s white goatee beard is the most well-observed piece of motorcycle tribal culture yet. Although you did miss the opportunity to don Walmart mom jeans and Rockports to complete the look.

Bikers love to mock each other but we all have our tribe which we can’t see in ourselves but which seems like an obvious cliche to others. At the end of the day I like variety and ride a few different kinds of bikes whilst trying to do what makes me happy and not what others expect of the style or brand of bike I am on.

That being said, the BMW is an horrific pastiche of a cruiser. The Harley is a great first attempt at an ADV bike but, impressively, is even uglier than the GS.

High side low side is 10/10. Please don’t make me have to buy a t-shirt.

  11. TheEasyrider1200 says:

I think you really need to consider operating costs when choosing a new bike. The BMW needs valve adjustments and syncing which for most mean an expensive trip to the dealer. All the tech on the Beemer is awesome until it breaks and you're out a few thou for repairs. I own both BMW and Harley, and bought an Africa Twin for an ADV bike, only because Harley took forever to bring the Pan American to market.

  12. fourteenfour says:

Is water wet? I say this as someone who has owned a BMW motorcycle since 96 and currently have a 2019 RT. The R18 is such a disappointment. Designed for Instagram and not riders

  13. charleetho says:

Having owned big GSs for 15 years and dealing with absurdly expensive repairs and poor engineering/durability. I'd give the Harley a chance if I was to buy another big adventure bike. Great video!

  14. Larry Ford says:

Let's get one thing straight. You guys can whip those heavy ADV bikes around off road pretty much better than most people can. How about a riding school too?
