Navin Rawanchaikul, whose epic painting Places of Rebirth was featured in the exhibition No Country: Contemporary Art for South and Southeast Asia, takes part in a family reunion. His 88 yearold grandmother in Chiang Mai cooks a special dessert, which for Navin recalls the memory of his late mother. The grandmother recounts the family’s postpartition journey from their homeland of Punjab (now Pakistan) to their “place of rebirth” in Thailand. Poring over old photos, she discusses the family’s roots and their arrival in Bangkok, and describes her idea of “home.”

Exploring aspects of community from a geocultural perspective, Navin Rawanchaikul’s A Tale of Two Cities incorporates deliberately nostalgic photographic studiostyle paintings, alongside documentary video, textual work, and sculptural installation. Developed from the artist’s penetrations into Hong Kong’s historic market areas that centred upon candid interviews with resident vendors, this new chronographic series traces the dramatic changes within urban Asian mercantile traditions. Within such a context, Navin draws Dickensian parallels to his own familial experience being raised within the once bustling central market in his hometown of Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.
