Reform UK has won two by-elections in a major blow to Keir Starmer after gaining from Labour. Nigel Farage’s party gained its first seat on Carmarthenshire County Council, taking over Llanelli’s Lliedi ward from Labour. The party also captured its first seat in Castle Point where Reform saw a landslide victory at the Canvey Winter Gardens borough by-election.
The results spells bad news for both the government and Kemi Badenoch’s Conservative Party who saw results far inferior to Reform UK. The Lliedi Council result saw Mr Farage’s party gain 42.6% of the vote share, while Labour lost a staggering 34.9 points, taking them down to 23.4%. The Tories also lost points, gaining just 7% which puts them in fifth place.

Reform’s new councillor, Michelle Beer got 568 votes, followed by Labour’s Andrew Bargoli on 312, Independent Sharon Burdess on 116, Plaid Cymru’s Taylor Reynolds on 107, Conservative Richard Williams on 93, Independent Alison Leyshon on 86, Liberal Democrat Jonathan Burree on 41 and Gwlad’s Wayne Erasmus on 9.
The results are a reflection of recent opinion polls which show Reform UK gaining many seats from Labour. Ms Beer is now Reform’s second elected councillor in Wales, following on from Stuart Keyte who won a by-election in February.
In Castle Point, Reform won 53.1% at the Canvey Island Winter Gardens by-election. Although they gained from Canvey Island Independents, the result still comes as a setback for Labour and the Tories, who only gained 17.3% and 9.8% respectively.

Reece Langley, the new councillor for Mr Farage’s party, won the by-election which was triggered after the death of the previous councillor. He gained 712 votes, with the Tories Paul Harbord gaining only 233 votes. Steve Sach for the Canvey Island Independent Party got 200, Moreblessing Chasiya for the Labour Party won 131 Votes and Bob Chapman for the Green Party won just 67.
The Reform win in Essex mirrors a wider support for the party in the area, which follows on from the recent Thurrock by-election win for Ockendon ward.
Essex also has two of the five Reform MPs – South Basildon and East Thurrock’s James McMurdock and Clacton’s Nigel Farage.
